Greg Wolfe discovered what so many of the young people who found Russell learned: that he very much enjoyed them. For all his scholarly ways, he was friendly but quiet, serious but mischievous and witty. And long before William Least Heat-Moon, he was taking the blue highways\u2013the back ways through the countryside, something student drivers learned to love, especially the stops for good snacks. Some of us still follow those less-traveled byways. Often we think of our former mentor and his silent but companionable ride in the front passenger seat.<\/p>\n
